State & federal OSHA standards require employers to use qualified riggers during hoisting activities or whenever workers are within the fall zone, while hooking, unhooking, guiding a load, or doing the initial connection of a load to a component, material or structure. This rigging & signalperson certification course provides attendees with the training required by state & federal standards. Attendees will learn how to assess, identify and control hazards at the workplace related to rigging & signalperson duties.

Due to the complexity of rigging & signaling, constantly changing jobsite conditions and unique job specific operations, personnel filling this role require additional project specific skills & support. In addition to this course, rigger & signalperson practical evaluation & oversight shall also be performed by a qualified person of their immediate employer.

  • General requirements, duties and responsibilities of a signal person
  • When a qualified rigger is required
  • Stresses placed on rigging and the load during hoisting operations
  • Inspection and rejection criteria for chain, synthetic and wire rope
  • Requirements for documentation of inspections
  • Proper use of basic rigging configurations
  • Proper storage of rigging, components & hardware
  • General requirements, duties and responsibilities of a signal person
  • Mobile, overhead and tower crane functions
  • Hand and voice communications
  • Hazards and requirements of working around energized power lines.
  • Regulations & signal person responsibilities regarding the use of suspended personnel platforms
  • Crane limitations created by radius, boom angle, load drift, two blocking, boom deflection,
    dynamic loading, side loading, capacity limitations and quadrants of operation

 

Course attendees must pass a written Rigging & Signal Person test with a minimum score of 80%. Course participants must also demonstrate practical inspection criteria and proper hand signals. Upon successful completion, attendees will receive a certificate of completion wallet card valid for three (3) years. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure employees are properly trained on individual rigging practices prior to the commencement of work activities.

Refresher training may also be needed when:

  • There is an incident or a near miss
  • Conditions change in the workplace which could affect safety
  • Employee has been observed performing tasks in an unsafe manner
  • Significant time has passed, and the employee’s abilities may require retraining
