Occupational diseases & fatalities across the United States are staggering. Protecting employees from workplace exposures to products or bi-products of a process is paramount in preventing these diseases & deaths. The Hazard Communication standard developed by OSHA, also known as HAZCOM, was recently aligned with the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), a worldwide standard, of classification and labeling of chemicals. The update to the standard provides a common approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). To properly ensure chemical safety in the workplace, information about the identities and risks involved with product use, shall be readily available and understandable to all employees.
OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard requires chemical manufacturers and importers to evaluate the hazards of the chemicals they produce or import and prepare labels and safety data sheets to convey the hazard information to their customers. In addition, all employers with hazardous chemicals in their workplaces must have proper labeling and safety data sheets for their exposed employees, and shall train them on how to handle, use, store and dispose of the chemicals appropriately.
